mobo + cpu compatability

I'm putting together a parts list for a new system around an a64 3200+ and
maybe an msi k8n nf4 neo plat ultra, but are they compatible with each
other? I've heard of problems where a mobo wouldn't boot with a particular
cpu without a bios upgrade, which couln't be installed b/c no boot (and so
on).

thanks,

The problem existed with an Asus A8V and Athlon 64 S939 3400+ combo. Not
with your board or processor.

AMD also has recommended mobo lists you may want to look at for other
things besides just the CPU.
http://www2.amd.com/us-en/Processors/DevelopWithAMD/1,,30_2252_869_9460%5E9461,00.html?1065217534

For example if I select CnQ (Cool N Quite) at this page for my chaintech
board it doesn't show up in the list, so I guess AMD found it's not CnQ
compatible, and their right, if I enable CnQ the system crashes with it
disabled it's 110% stable.

Good link there too Ed, thanks.

Whether or not the board you choose is on the list or not makes no
difference. My MB for instance isn't listed. Even the brand name isn't
listed, yet CnQ and the system works just fine. I'd put more faith in my
own abilities than to just blindly choose a board from the list.

Ya I agree, I've built many systems with boards not recommended by AMD,
this chaintech board wasn't listed either when I bought it 6 months ago,
but now it is, but when you add CnQ to the search it's NOT listed, so
all I can assume is AMD doesn't recommend this board if you want CnQ
support?

btw, I have CnQ working on 3 MSI boards.
Cheers,
Ed

The list just helps confirm my choice and is just one valueable research
tool (which I've bookmarked), to be
considered along with everyone's experienced opinions. As a newb to major
upgrading I'm being extra careful
to avoid any major incompatibiles as I plan things.

Thanks again!
