My current system is in desperate need of an upgrade, the current MOBO is AMD. Research seems to suggest intel to be better for my needs than AMD; therefore, I am going with an i3 as it is within my budget. I only hope to replace the MOBO, CPU, and PSU.

The computer came with OEM win7, which was upgraded to win10 during the free period. My hope is to do the swap and start the system back up. I have followed the activation process for the Microsoft account version and is active.

This computer is for home and work (I telecommute), so I can't have any downtime past a weekend's worth. I can't be re-installing an OS as I have work specific programs installed by our IT department, so a system wipe wouldn't allow me to work on Monday if I did the upgrade over the weekend.

I need a step-by-step process to follow if one exists. Some say it's possible, some say it's not. Some say don't change CPU manufacturer's, some say it's OK. Some say intel is junk, some say AMD is junk. I'm not trying anything fancy, I don't intend to do gaming. But this upgrade needs to happen and for under $300 it is well within my budget.

Solution
Yes - that seems to be most appropriate solution for your situation.
Build new computer, prepare it for work, install all the necessary software and only then switch to it.
All the process may require several days (depending on, how much software needs to be installed).
If you have critical work on Monday you shouldn't upgrade - even if you stick with AMD. Windows does not handle chipset changes very well (which a new mobo would entail) - even if it boots you'll likely have a poor experience.

If you switch from AMD to Intel you'll have to do a clean install of Windows - no way around it. Also, your Windows activation is tied to your motherboard - a new MOBO will likely need a new Win 10 key.
