I recently wiped my hard drive and reinstalled a windows 7. My gpu was detected once and it worked but once I restarted my computer after installing a bunch of drivers the mobo wouldn't detect the gpu. Theres nothing in my BIOS and under my device manager it just shows standard VGA graphics adapter under display adapters. It was working for a coupel of days when I got back so I dont think its dead and it might be the drivers.

parts:
H61/U3S3 asrock mobo
i5 2400
1x4gb gskill ddr3 1333 ram
sapphire hd 6870
Seasonic M12II 520 BRONZE psu

I had this problem with my first AMD GPU. What you need to do is connect it to the monitor via VGA and run it off ofwindows default drivers first. Then use the install disc that came with the card...

The monitor is hooked up to my motherboard, not the card.

The card is definitely getting power and I've reseated it 3 times. Could the GPU just be dead?

unfortunately I don't have another computer to use this gpu with nor do I have a spare gpu to test out. I've looked in my bios settings and don't see anything about a primary display adapter.

I had this problem with my first AMD GPU. What you need to do is connect it to the monitor via VGA and run it off ofwindows default drivers first. Then use the install disc that came with the card to load drivers, because the drivers you get from the AMD site don't work for some reason. Only after you've installed everything right and checked DXDIAG and made sure you've got the drivers can you then use HDMI.

I finally got it to work! I'm not sure how or why but after I used the CD from sapphire for my GPU I used the dvi instead of hdmi to my gpu and it detected it. I managed to reinstall the newest drivers from amd because it was finally detected and now its working perfectly.
