Mobo for E6600 @ 3200 (8x400) 24/7?

Hello everybody!
I am shopping for a mobo for a new rig (C2D E6600, Ninja +, 2GB OCZ Platinum rev2 6400, Leadtek 7900 GS, 3 PCI cards) with the goal of attaining an OC of 3200 (8x400, or 9x360ish) for daily usage (non SLI gaming, video rendering<=> firewire).
I am calling on your collective knowledge about a suitable motherboard which would help me accomplish my goal (if possible) with no additional cooling on the "bridges" and with minimal BIOS adjustments. Intended lifespan of the rig around 3 years.

Pretty steep goals :lol:

I've got an A-bit AB9 Pro that works pretty darn good @ 8x450. 8x400 would be a walk in the park. Bear in mind that on a P965 mobo, the actual FSB is 450 mhz when dropping from 9 to 8x. That means your memory is DDR2-900 with a 1:1 divider.

Why wouldn't you spend the $5 for a 40mm fan that screws into the NB heatsink? If you're looking for that much reliability, you should be taking the extra steps. If you're looking for 3 years, don't overclock! That's the only way I can think of guaranteeing you getting the most time out of a mobo. There is no "guarantee" of 3 years anyway, since the chipset and CPU are relatively new.

Do like I do and cross your fingers :roll:
 
I've got a P5N-SLI, which supports 1333 fsb, so i bump my 6600 up to 3.0ghz so the fsb is running at 1333. Another 200 mhz boost on the processor speed would be no sweat for this board and shouldn't reduce the life much.

Looking at the specs for AB9 Pro, it lacks IEEE 1394 port, and I am already overcrowded with PCI cards (3). It seems that all ABIT 965 Series are out of my harware requirements.
As for spending some extra $ on additional bridge cooling, I would rather spend some extra $ on a mobo with good "native" cooling (I know, I am lazy :lol: ).

P5N SLI, is that based on 650i (P5N E) chipset or the 570 chipset?

All 3 AB9 family mobos have IEE1394 but none have 3 PCI slots (all have 2).
 
You are right, the AB9 supports IEEE 1394 with an extension to either front or rear panel. Still not enough PCI slots.

Most reports I've seen, people are getting ~400-440 range with little problem and folks on coolaler (taiwan forum) are getting 515 FSB... sounds good to me :).

I'll know more once my case arrives tomorrow.
 
Yeah, there are only a small number of reviews available about MSI 650i boards, and as for the FI version I read that it has a hot running NB and a funny NB HS shape so is not easy to place a fan on it.
 
I doubt it's NB runs hotter than any other 650i-based board, but I agree about the odd-shaped heat-sink... best bet would be to replace that entire thing.
 
Asus P5W Deluxe with a good HSF (Thermalright Ultra 120 with Scythe 120mm Fan). 2 Firewire 400 port (one header for case and one on back plate). 3 PCIs, 2 PCI-x@1x, 2 PCI-x@16x (8x/8x for Crossfire), 8 USB ports, 3 SATA from ICH7, 2 SATA from Silicon controller (For Raid 0/1), 2 SATA from JMicron control (1 internal, 1 external SATA), 2 IDE Controller for 4 IDE Devices (1 is controlled from ICH7, 1 is controlled by JMicron).

Very easily overclockable. Increase vcore to 1.45v and bus speed to 400 running at 3.6GHz stable around 35C Idle and 47-50C Load. Set RAM to PC4300 for 1:1 and you got yourself a good system. Or set bus speed to 333Mhz (1333 FSB) without increasing vcore voltage to run around 3.0GHz.

Mature 975X for fast performance, don't have to deal with crappy Nvidia bios and high energy consumption, don't have to deal with P965 Raid and IDE issues. You won't be dissapointed.
 
P5W 975X 9x400 sounds nice, but have you experienced working at 9x360 FSB? Isn't there any FSB "hole" around 350-360FSB? And why PC 4300 for 1:1?
 
I haven't tried 350-370 bus speeds, but i think it should be fine, you just gotta play with vmem, vcore, and vmch. 333.33 MHz worked fine at stock vcore. Achieving 3.2GHz with 975X with an E6600 is very possible.

I have some DDR2 800 and I configure it as DDR2 533 (Which is PC2 4300 I believe) for 1:1 (FSB:RAM) so the FSB and RAM are running in 1:1 synchronous speed. If you configure the DDR2 800 with 1033FSB, you'll be running at 2:3 FSB to RAM. When you run at 1:1 FSB:RAM, the RAM frequency will auto increase automatically when you increase the bus speed so if you have DDR2 800 (400) with a 400MHz (1600MHz FSB) bus speed, you'll be running at 1:1 FSB:RAM synchronous. If you run at 2:3 ratio and overclock, you'll need better RAM (DDR 1066 or higher) or the RAM will overheat because they are rated at 800MHz (Most if not all Core 2 Duo overclockers will tell you to set your RAM to DDR2 533 as the very first thing to do for best results).

If you don't want FSB:RAM synchronous, you'll have to try AMD's (ATI) RD600 (DFI LANPARTY ICX3200) which feature asynchronous RAM:FSB.

Usually the FSB "holes" can be fixed by bios updates; considering 975X has been around for awhile, there should be bios updates that should've taken care of those "holes".

The P5W Deluxe will reset your bios if your overclock setting fails with just a push of the reset buttons. You can also save 2-3 different overclocking profiles so you can load which ever one you want when you want. For normal use I'm just using the stock 266.67 MHz Bus speed to keep the temp low (around 26-29C). When I want to game I just reset my comp and call up my OC profile. Running at 400MHz bus speed REALLY speed up my Vista boot time, but my fans (PWM controlled) are max and are very load.

No Crashes, all stable and no hardware complications. Plays Half life 2: Episode One and WOW at 1920x1080 resolution often with solid FPS. Records HDTV ASTC program daily using media center. Onboard sound is good enough for me, I do have an Audigy ZS from my old comp, but afraid to use it because of beta driver in Vista. Couldn't be happier! [/b]
