Mobo fried when installing new SSD.

So, not my first PC build, but definitely my latest and most expensive. Been running plenty fine for the last year, but decided I needed more space and there was a sale going on. After updating BIOS and making sure everything still worked fine, I shut down the PC, cut off power to it, and went about installing a new SSD. Plugged in, ready to go, started her ul and...instant on/off. Figure potentially too much pull on the PSU, so reversed the install, turned power back on, and pressed the button just to have about 4 seconds of smooth startup before a pop, sizzle, and glowing chip on the board.

Have a replacement now, but I'm hesitant to get the thing up and running without knowing if the rest of my components are safe. Visual inspection shows zero damage to anything other than the old board, but is that enough? Suggestions would be nice, but money is tight after getting the replacement.

Specs:
Corsair HX750i PSU
MSI Seahawk 1080 Ti
i7-8700k
Corsair H115i
16GB G.Skill Trident Z RGB
Samsung 860 Evo SSD
WD Blue 500GB HDD
Asus Maximus Hero X WiFi AC mobo
Corsair LL fans everywhere and led control nodes

Solution
Could be that sata power/data cable shorted.
If you have old/really old pc with sata support you can test there the ssd, do not use same sata cable that might caused you issue.
