I'm building a pc and I think i messed up my motherboard by trying to install a heatsink. the instructions kind of sucked and i didn't have a screw mount in. i was touching the back of the mobo a lot trying to get everything set up.

I wore an anti-static wristband, but it's very static-y in my apartment so that may be an issue as well.

Anyway, I can get the mobo powered on by shorting the pins. The cpu fan turns on and the LED lights on the mobo turn on as well. however, there's no display.

What motherboard...cpu...psu...memory...gpu is insalled in your system

and just on a whim: is your display plugged into the GPU or the motherboard?

Motherboard: MSI Z370-A Pro
CPU: i5-9500k
Memory: DDR4 2x8 16gb

No, I don't have a GPU installed yet. I tried both the displayport and dvi.

also tried only using 1 stick of ram

Ah thank you. I can see this is a common issue when searching this mobo + cpu combo.

I'm glad my components aren't broken. wish i paid attention to the generation thing. May return CPU for 8th gen instead of buying cheap processor.
