Mobo/RAM compatibility

I'm looking at buying a motherboard for a new build and the board I have in mind comes with a *free* 8GB memory module. However, when I check the manufacturer's memory support list, the free memory stick doesn't show up in the list. So, my question is, how crucial is it that a particular memory stick (brand and model) shows up in the compatibility list?

I want to hit 16GB ram on this build so if the free stick works I'd consider buying a second stick but I'm also considering a higher speed ram kit. The free stick is 1600 and the board says it supports up to 2800.

It isn't terribly important that you buy from the QVL. Typically, though, if you get a no boot situation, the tech support for the mobo will likely tell you to try RAM from the QVL, unless you can prove that without a doubt the mobo is bad.

It didn't start out as intentional...but I did notice it while writing and decided to leave it in. I did a bit more digging around here and on the Googler and came to roughly the same conclusion. I was worried about voltages for a little while until I went back over the QVL and noticed that there were voltages in both the 1.5 and 1.65 camps. So, I'm just gonna try my luck. Thanks for the answer though! Helps reinforce my choice.

QVL a list of tested memory modules. This is like GM telling they tried Exxon gas in your car and the engine is happy... That dows not mean that if you put texaco gas you car will stop running. RAM that follow JEDEC specs should work with any mobo.
