MOBOS, AGP and SLI

You know what I find really frustrating? Why won't they develop a mobo that will support both agp and sli so I can use my 6800GT for another year or two and then 'upgrade' to SLI when I need to? It doesn't make sense to buy a new board and processor with agp...and it doesn't make sense to buy a new board with SLI (and case for that matter) when I've got a 6800gt. I think it would be great to get a new board and processor and use my gt for a while, then upgrade to sli cards when I need to.
Is the architecture that different and/or difficult that it can't be done? Wouldn't buyers like the flexibility? Wouldn't it be easier on the wallet?

It's not worth the hassle, not enough buyers like you. Also there would probably be timing issues between the two cards.

In two years..

... SLI might not be hot anymore because newer GPU can perform all the work by themself....

... ATI could have developped a new technology that would make SLI so obsolete you'll regret to have get it at the first place..

... nvidia could have something like SLI2 that you'll want anyway but need a motherboard upgrade ...

... new chipset and CPU are going to outperform the one we have now and will require motherboard upgrade..

Many peoples that are living now will be dead in two years, that might include you and me..

... might have a natural disaster, global war,.. and all the human killed so no more worry..

You do care so much for what might happen to your computer in 2 years?

All valid points...still doesn't make me feel better knowing that when I have to upgrade (if I'm still alive) I will have to replace my mobo, processor and ram, I'm also going to have to upgrade my vid card...maybe.
I mean, my point is, how hard can it really be to give people a choice and some value for all of the $ we have to spend keeping up our addictions...'Hey, use agp if you want...ready to move up to dual sli? Our board can do that to, just adjust the bios'.
In the end, I guess it's better to assess the situation at such time and go with what is the best option at that time.

first, SLI cannot work with AGP, AGP on PCIe boards are just AGP slot using the PCI bus and killing the performance badly and not even compatible with all high end video card.

So, you can have a board that have PCIe and AGP now. Great, you think because you already have a 6800. If your 6800 can run on it, it will run so slow you'll regret trying that. Then, you have the choice.. either get a new 6800 PCIe card that will cost 3 time the price of a motherboard or get an AGP motherboard. Which is the most economic??

Getting the right parts right now. That will make your computer much more efficient, and you wont have to upgrade as often, because the better system last longer..

And having a motherboard that support all kind of standard will mostly result an underperforming motherboard, to accomodate all kind of timing, an unstable motherboard, as there is more risk of component imcompatibility, higher cost, as they will take much more parts and time to design one, very good marketting to convince serious peoples that such a mess is the way to go..

Hey! People are still asking about if IDE HDD can be used with SATA HDD on the same mobo!!! Believe me, when it come to computer motherboard, the simpler is the better...

then upgrade to sli cards when I need to.....

Is what the man sed. So hes after agp + 2 PCI-e SLi slots.

Anyone ...anyone who thinks that mobo makers couldnt sort out a mobo with AGP and PCI-e, both full strenght, is off their head.

Another poster said that he (the poster) would be only one of the few who would want this.

BULL. look at the high end mobo and vid card markets the stuff we all want to buy only accounts for a fraction of total sales but manufacturers still sell it.

Dont kid yourself, if at the start they offered AGP and PCI-e mobos that worked fine (dont even think about it....via do one thats fine for intel...) you'd be playing on one right now.

It was obviously decided that from a manufacturing and profit point of view that it was best to make a clean break and all migrate to PCI-e stuff now in one go rather than over a couple of years (at the least).

Flame all you like I am undeniabley right!!!!

(obviously I still have a lot of issues with the cost of upgrading to PCI-e!!!)

Right duncmac. That's all I was trying to say. You know damn well these people could make a board like that...they just don't because they want the consumers to have to continually upgrade multiple parts of their rigs every year or so. Can your average gamer afford to by a new mobo with SLI AND afford the new card(s)? Nope...

You shuold know by being into computers everything changes is such a short time. You'll never have the best cause there will be something out within 6 months. So I would get the best you can now, and enjoy it for awhile. I learned that back in 89'
