Really unfortunate that there aren't any benchmarks given the increased bandwidth. I certainly see the appeal of 32GB DRAM no matter given that being able to assign 8GB to video would still leave plenty for the system.

The RAM upgrade seems pretty pointless for a device that drives 1080p and ray tracing is out of the question.
Now, the battery upgrade, THAT is massive. The biggest downside of this console is undoubtedly the battery capacity. By doubling that, you will edge out the OLED SD in the most demanding titles and get similar or even better playtime. Though the upgrade cost is a bit too much - 200 would be ideal.

Since the video memory is shared having 32 or even 24GB would be really nice. I've noticed a lot of games run much better when the video memory is set to 6GB / 10GB for system than the default 4GB / 12GB split. Being able to go 8GB/16GB instead of 8GB/8GB would be nice.

I can never understand why manufacturers love putting inadequate batteries in devices when it wouldn't cost much more to give them adequate capacity. It's as though there's some marketing idiot high up at companies that seems to think making devices a tiny bit thinner at the cost of battery usefulness will somehow drive sales.

The other big downsides are not having a touchpad, the screen being smaller than it needs for that form factor, and only having a single USB-C port which will inevitably wear out when the 1 year warranty expires. The Lenovo handheld seems to have solved those issues but it came out late 🙁

Answer : Weight . especially for handhelds .
I have one right here and it's so light it almost feels cheap. Another 10-20% in weight would probably make it feel nicer to hold. Some of these laptops and handhelds the battery is seriously skimpy to the point where doubling it wouldn't even be a noticable amount of weight.

They are only idiots to engineers and techs who visit forums like this. It seems the vast majority of customers have no brains and are lead by their emotions and like shiny things.
If it takes more than a 15 second tic toc video to explain something it hurts their little minds.
The main thing I liked marketing guys for is they could go tell the customers what they wanted to hear and I did not have to deal with offending a customer by telling them it was technically impossible for the amount of money they were willing to pay. The marketing guy would make them feel happy about being told they were idiots.

Fair enough. It's how Apple has maintained a customer base all these years.

there is an example of the performance gains, mind you all that effort with figuring out how to actually do that upgrade came exclusively from a whole bunch of us in the ROGAlly Discord...

Nobody really cares about RT on a mobile device. And without benchmarks how do you know its useless.

Most of the APU are bandwidth greedy so there should be a performance difference since its faster memory and not just capacity upgrade.

I’m the creator of the video that the article showcases. This mod wasn’t a one man show. Over on the ROG Ally discord are a ton of very smart and talented individuals who’ve helped me carry out this mod. I'd like to specifically thank e1000 for providing a ton of helpful information and guiding me through the flashing process, 95Jake (https://github.com/95JakeHex/APCB_ROG...) for providing the APCB edits required for the BIOS, beardymcgee ( 📷 / beardymcgee ) for being the first person to upgrade the Ally's memory, thus planting the idea that this is possible, Treezus (aka https://swansonsolder.com/), DesignGears & Tekgnome (https://www.thingiverse.com/darkk3y/d...) for creating the battery tray for the battery mod, and YesItsKira (https://www.thingiverse.com/yesitskir...) for designing the backplate for the Ally's battery mod.

batteries are the heaviest part in any handheld, and they are noticeable.
