Hallo,
I have seen on diverse sites reports that a 5900 can be changed to a 5950
Ultra by flashing it a new bios, is this correct? If so can i do it with my
Club 3D 5900 XT? Has anyone here done so successfully with this Card? And
most importantly, will i get any real benefit out of this, apart from it
showing in my system properties as a 5950 Ultra, i mean will i see a huge
differance in games? Sorry for so many questions, and thanks to those of you
who can help me.

All the best

Rob

No, not with an XT for two reasons
1. The XT usually has 2.8ns memory - not fast enough to cope with the 5950
standard timings (2ns)
2. Lack of memory heatsinks / cooling - the XT cards have a cut down cooling
solution compared to the 2 PCI slot 5900's - the card will overheat if
overclocked too much.
People have successfully flashed the standard 5900 cards to 5950 - (the 5900
uses 2.2ns memory), but several users trying to do the same with their XT's
have stopped it working at all. If this happened you may be able to flash
the original XT bios back using a PCI vga card to boot with, or some peeps
have planned ahead and prepared a boot disk that includes the original flash
bin so the bios can be re-loaded even without seeing anything on screen but
seems too risky to me...IMO

Hi,
Thanks for the quick answer, with ref to answer 1 i have heard that there
are 2 types of memory for the XT Hynix and samsung, those who have samsung
are the unlucky ones, the hynix is (reportedly) capable of clocking higher
than 714mhz (2.8ns) it is supposedly slower clocked 2.2ns ram (not too sure
how anyone can find this out for his/her card though. With ref to answer 2
my card has heatsinks on the memory which is good in a sense, but i would
love to know what memory is under there.

regards
Rob

You could try posting the question about the type of memory on your card to
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=5
There are many threads here about flashing the 5900XT but the concensus
seems to be 'no'

Not the case - my Leadtek XT card copes just fine as a 5950U, and it has the
slower 2.8ns memory.
The 5950U BIOS actually backs off the memory timings slightly, allowing it
to clock a lots higher than the default 750MHz. Lots of cards comfortably
make 950MHz with the 5950U BIOS, but can't manage it with the stock BIOS.

Again, not the case. The 5950U BIOS increase the card's fan-speed slightly -
and mose people have found that their temps go DOWN in 5950U mode ! Mine
stayed almost exactly the same.

The 5950U cards all come with ramsinks though, so this maybe something you
should look at. In my experience though, ramsinks have no effect whatsoever
on DDR-based memory (spread area access) - they're only needed on
RAMBUS-based memory (narrow area access) to even out the chip temps.

You have nothing to lose, so you may as well give it a go. Worst case
scenario is that you simply have to flash back your old BIOS.
