Hi I just got a Buffalo Dual Band Wireless N (WZR-1750DHP) and connected to my router. I'm a total noob when it comes to these stuff but I just been testing the wireless to see which one was faster. I think there was no difference tho and I didn't know really how to check.

Is the Buufalo just a modem? I gather it is or it doesn't make sense. Have you got something against getting a modem/router - combined modem and router all in one case, no additional wiring?

You can get internet connection, using the Network function in Control Panel with Windows, to connect your pc to a router - by wifi (if you have a wifi card) or by ethernet cable if you have an ethernet port on your pc.

The router has antennae and ethernet ports for you to connect to.

So, in your case, the internet is transferred from the modem to the router to your pc.

Your internet plan determines the maximum speed everything can run at. The modem then will determine what speed it can send to the router and the router will determine what speed and signal strength that it can send to your pc - by cable or wifi. Your wifi card will determine how fast the signal is going from it to your computer.

So - I was hoping you would provide me with 'links' - internet addresses - of the websites that have the info/specs on - your modem, your router and your wifi card. This will tell me how fast everything CAN go.

If you've replaced on of your current bits and want to be able to compare it to an old bit that you used to use, then I'd also need the link to that device too. Otherwise we're just shooting the breeze and using generalisations.

The router will run at 1300mpbs - fine.

The second one is actually a modem/router. The info on it is not complete. It doesn't give the Mbps figure or even say which band it runs on - 5GHz or 2.4Ghz. How old is it? See if you can find a website rather than just a pdf.

If I was buying a modem/router, I wouldn't buy that one. If you've got $100, you could buy a new one say

You can't use just the router without a modem. But you can use the modem/router eg Netgear DGN3700

No - the other way around - you can just use the actiontec modem/router.

The Buffalo is a router only and needs a modem to work

But if you can rake up some dough, the Netgear dgn3700 will work a lot better

Try and find your wifi card though

So at the moment you should be able to just use the actiontec modem/router and wifi connection to your pc

But - the actiontec doesn't look very good to me I'd recommend replacing it with the netgear dgn3700.

And if there's no antennae sticking out of your hp, you should get a wifi card eg Asus N53

Meanwhile, try to get the hp as near to the router as possible. If you can get it close enough, you can use ethernet cable instead of wifi. Ethernet cable is faster.

Thank you so much for helping I just got the n53 today if you say just use the actiontec modem/router then I should unplug the buffalo one and connect it with the actiontec wifi instead?
