Hi,
I have TPlink TD-8817 modem (ADSL modem provided by my ISP) & i connect it to Dlink DIR-600L wifi router so i can have wifi access at home.

About 2 days ago i noticed the internet's stopped working, the modem's LAN light indicator was off but all the other lights were on (so it seemed like the LAN cable's unplugged), so i checked the cable but it's plugged.

then I tried unplugging the cable from the wifi router and connected the modem to my laptop directly and it worked.

thinking the problem is with the router, i tried plugging the LAN cable from the modem to my PS4 console, but the LAN light indicator went off again and when i tried setting the internet connection on PS4 it said "please plug the LAN cable".

TL;DR:
so I can only use the internet if i connect the modem to my laptop, but modem - PS4/router won't detect each other.

what i've done so far:

  • ■turn off/on both the modem & router (and the PS4)
■bring the wifi router to a friend's home to check if the problem is within the router (but no, the router works fine)
    ■use other LAN cable
■reset to factory setting (both modem & router) using the tiny pinhole button
■I also called my ISP, the customer service guy said "please check the modem setting (browser: 192.168.1.1) on interface setup/LAN/physical port and check the check box", but i can't find the physical port setting on the interface setup/LAN menu.
(sorry for bad grammar and poor choice of words).
pls help.

regards'

for myself i have separate passwords to login to my router and my modem. Chances are your laptop has logged into your modem before to get internet so its username/password is saved. while the ps4 has only used the router before this point. Try setting up a new connection for PS4 for the modem username/password. Also make sure you modem's ethernet cable goes from lan ethernet port to your router's wan ethernet port not lan ethernet port it may be someone disconnected them then reconnected to the wrong port since your bridging a connection.

hi, thanks for the reply

that's what I did. my PS4 have no previous LAN cable connection setup before (if it have and I tried to set another one it will say something like "you already have LAN cable setup previously, do you want to use the setting or create another one"?)

so i tried setting up LAN cable connection and then it said something like "please plug the cable to the ethernet port:".

So I think the problem is not PS4 failed to connect to the internet, the problem is the console failed to setup LAN cable connection due to PS4-modem don't recognize each other, as if the cable is unplugged.

I don't really understand about the LAN/WAN difference but the ADSL modem has only 1 ethernet port, no chance of wrong plugging in there. The wifi router has 1 port colored yellow with a word "internet" and there are 4 other port number 1,2,3,4.

I've checked the router setting after i reset it: the LAN cable goes from the modem to the yellow "internet" port on the router and I use another LAN cable to connect the laptop to one of the ports numbered 1-4 and similar to the PS4 issue: on the router setup menu, there's a warning said something like "please plug the router to the modem".

so like I said, it seems like the modem don't recognize both PS4 and router. :??:

I suspect it's got something to do with the modem setting. perhaps the DNS/IP address/mac address and whatnot?
after i reset the modem (with the pinhole button), I contacted the ISP and asked the customer service guy to guide me to set it up. The ISP guy did just that but his job's done when i can use the modem & laptop to browse the internet.

is there anything in the modem setting that can make the LAN connection goes off if plugged to devices other than PC?

when the isp tech helped you set up your modem he probably gave you a Username and Password and made you set your connection type as PPPoE. It seems that your ps4 was working with your router before it messed up but does not work with your modem so if you could get your router working again your ps4 would be able to connect through the router. If your able to access your modem again you could set a bridged connection type to your router and then in your router's set up(for mine I type in the address bar 192.168.11.1 and then type in my username/password). Your ip, user, pass should be on the side of router.
steps.
-enter modem setup and create a bridged connection
-enter router
-on basic setup->WAN setup
-PPPoE Then type in your username and password that would be ussually used to set up modem connection
The isp tech didn't guide you through setting up bridged connection(modem-router-computer) and only set up the normal everything through the modem which is what you wanted but it seems that only your laptop is recognized through Ethernet and not your ps4 so seeing if bridging works would be your best course of action that's assuming your router isn't the problem. If the routers a problem you can get DD-WRT software routers pretty cheap.
Also the yellow port on the router is the correct wan port. (Wide area network) lan(local area network). Your local network is all the device you connect to the internet while your wide area network is internet side. So when you bridge essentially all your modem is doing is being a conduit to your router which is now what gives the ip's to your LAN. At the moment though your modem is the one resolving your ip's.

hi, thanks again for the reply :)
last night i gave another call to my ISP asking is there anything in modem setting that prevent the modem to connect to another devices, but nope, the ISP guy guide me to use the same setting & said he's gonna send a technician.

yeah he told me to tick the PPPoE/PPPoA box.

thanks, i'll try it tonight :wahoo:
and no, the router works fine in my friend's home.

any chance it's just a case of faulty/defect modem?
Not sure if i just saw what i wanna see, last night i was trying to turning off/on the modem. When i was turning it back on, the modem still off. like it's broken or something. so like a networking expert, i click the power button repeatedly and then it went back on.

i'll try your suggestion to setup the bridge connection tonight. thanks a lot Greenpernod :)

update:
i went to the ISP office, luckily it's open on saturday, i asked the technician to come to my house right away and check the modem (for a little extra tip). Don't know if the modem really was broken or the tech's looking for extra money, he sold me a new modem (wireless) and now the problem's fixed.

p.s. i got night owl badge  it's 15:26 here, i didn't change the time zone when i registered
