modem connection issues

how do i connect my deskpto as well as my mobile at the same time ? my desktop uses wired ethernet and on my mobile i use the wireless of the same modem..nd when i connect both it gives me an error on my desktop stating "IP conflict error" and i cant use internet on my desktop..it allows me usage only on my mobile.. wen using separately there seems to be no problem in both

You need a router, your modem allows only one IP to be assigned..

You can only have one device normally connected to a dedicated modem at any one time, hence the IP conflict.

To have multiple device connected by cable and wireless, you need to have a router connected to the modem, which will then issue IP's on your own private network and handle the routing out to the outside world on the IP assigned by your internet provider.

Now the big question how much?

All depends on what you want, a cheap router can be from £25, but may limit network performance or be hampered by your building construction due to low power wifi radios, while an expensive once, anywhere up to £150+, will do everything, will have better network performance, more powerful wifi radios, more memory, faster processors and provide both 2.4ghz and 5ghz frequencies and more.

but the BSNL modem i have says it supports 4 PC ethernet slots and one wireless antena device..do they mean all 5 can be connected only one a time then ??

If the case, something is not right.

If it states you can connect up to 4 personal computers via the wired 4 port Ethernet connections of the modem provided
And also wi-fi.

Then it suggests that the DHCP server of the router is not working.
The Dhcp of a router keeps track of the IP addresses it gives out.

So for example : Modem IP 111.12.63.125 : Dhcp pool 192.168.0.1 to 255.

Any machine that connects to the router will be given an ip in the range of 192.168.0.xxx to 255 connected to router.

It looks like the Dhcp in the router needs to be changed on the amount of devices.

You should be able to set how many devices you wish to use as part of a network.

so for example the max is 255

But it is set to 192.168.0.1 and one device it is the reason for the IP conflict.
The number of devices to use at the same time must be set as the default may be one.

You can do this by logging into the router with the password and user name provided.
Then change the value or number of addresses the DHCP gives out.
So IP range 192.168.0.1 6 connecting.

192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.6 one for each machine.
for use at the same time as connected.

Ip conflict solved.
