For reasons I don't understand, my modem has "lost its voice". It dials out
& connects normally, but there is no longer any sound from the computer
speaker. I've checked the control panel | sounds and levels and other
things seem normal. Could it be that the modem initialization settings got
changed? If so, how do I access them in WinXP Home?

Mea maxima culpa. The problem was that the external speaker was plugged
into the laptop and not turned on. The plug disables the internal speaker.
I figured this out myself after spending a fruitless hour on the phone with
a very nice young lady from Dell support in India.
