We have Cox as our internet provider and we use the modem they supplied and a Linksys E2500 router.

We are thinking about upgrading the equipment and we are wondering if it would be best to get a Wireless Modem (and eliminate a separate router), or still go with a modem and router.
One advantage of a wireless modem is obviously having less clutter. Are there any other benefits or drawbacks?

Your advice will be appreciated.

The modem/router combo is the jack of all trades, and master of none. The main advantage is it uses less space, and is simpler to configure.

However, the router they include in the combo device is nothing great, and they are usually 802.11n, when the current standard is 802.11ac. These combo devices also have less options for advanced wireless features, such as QOS (quality of service to prioritize video traffic). They also get less frequent firmware upgrades.

In summary, you are better off with a separate modem and router. You can at least upgrade each as needed.
