Modem/Router compatibility with ISP questions?

My current ISP (time Warner) only has a small amount of crappy routers that are "officially supported", but I want to use something that has the things that i need, and us whatever I want.

So here are my questions:

1. Does official compatibility mean anything? Can I just use any 2 in 1 router/modem/?
2. If I get a modem ONLY, compatible with my isp, then can I use any router?
3, If so, can it be a router that has a modem built in? Would that cause issues?

1. well that is a grey are, technically speaking if you byu a modem that over performs a defined modem they recommend, you wont get any real benefits, buying a non recommended modem can cause 2 things to happen, 1) they cannot configure it to work with their network, 2) if a problem occur and tracked down to your modem they can charge you ton of repair bills.

2. do like I did, get the best cable modem you can, and get yourself a nice router

I personally don't like to buy integrated modem/routers, why, because modem usually do not need upgrading very often, the technology hasn't move a lot on them, but you will upgrade your router meanwhile, and if a single unit, you get to upgrade both, means you need to make sure your ISP approves blah blah blah, where separate units permit you to be compatible withy ISP, and get what ever router suits your needs.

For the record, I use the Arris SB 6190 on Xfinity (a compatible modem with TWC) and works without a hitch up to 300 MBS,
what is your plan on TWC, if it isn't higher than 100/5 then its just fine for your needs, buts its a modem, you will need a router behind it.

I think i am going to switch ISPs soon so I think I'll buy a suitable router and then either buy or rent a compatible Modem for whatever ISP i have and then continue to use whatever router I buy.
