Modem/Router or Extender

I currently lease my modem through my ISP-Cable One (2.5ghz). They only support Arris/Netgear modem/router combos. I live in a two-story home that is only 10 years old. The wifi does not work well on the second floor, even in the room directly above the modem/router. Would upgrading to a dual band modem/router help extend the wifi? Would an extender still be needed? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Personally, I have not heard good things about extenders. Although, tbh I have not tried them myself and have only done so much of my own research. So if someone recommends them, take their advice over mine. What has worked for my house is setting up a router downstairs and a modem upstairs. Unfortunately this means we have different wifi connections for different parts of the house (i.e. you can't be connected to both at the same time so navigating between the router/modem means you have to switch between them on network settings based on which is closer.) Hope that helps.
