Modem sounds

Guess not many people use modems anymore. Got a usb external modem (56k, can be used for data/voice). Works perfectly. Except what puzzles me is that I do not hear any sounds. When I receive faxes, I hear no rings, not even a screech. I use it with Windows 7. Now when I turn on my loudspeakers, there are the sounds. Why does the modem itself not produce sounds? Strange...

Solution

The most likely reason is that virtually all computers have speakers now, so a built-in speaker is not needed. Also, I would think it is much easier to control the volume from the main speaker control rather than a separate utility like old modems.
