Modem to Computer

i been having problems with my internet connection, i think its my router so i tried connecting the modem directly to my computer to see if it really is the router. But when i connect it, it doesnt work? only works when the modem connects to the router?

If it's a cable modem, did you power cycle the modem before connecting it to your computer?
