Hi guys,

I am currently upgrading my system to play sim racing title RFactor 2 (RF2), which is a dx9 game. I have already got a more than decent new i5 CPU and z97 mobo, now just need to choose a gfx card, I intend to get AMD gfx card for better value for money. Heres a few important bits of info :

- RF2 is dx9 and it is the only title I play, and it is highly likely to stay that way
- The developers of RF2 do not move fast, I seriously doubt they will upgrade RF2 from dx9 anytime soon, and I mean years.

So unlike many gamers, my situation is a bit different. In the year of 2016 I am faced with purchasing new hardware to play a dx9 game, and I only play this 1 game, and this game is not at all likely to move from dx9 for years yet. I felt the AMD 380 4gb Nitro card would be a good purchase for me.

Now this is the thing. It seems more modern gfx cards are geared to dx10/11 and maybe 12, and the card specs are going up and up, but that performance does not necessarily translate into reality for a dx9 game. Please take a look at this, 280x vs 380 on gpuboss http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-R9-380-vs-Radeon-R9-280X

Now, look at that 3dmark06 score! The 3dmark06 benchmark is for the dx9 titles, and here the 280x scores over double the 380 even though on almost every other count, the 380 wins hands down! That comparison is just an example, but now I am concerned that I may be making a big mistake getting 380, perhaps 280x or some other card would provide a lot more performance / value for money for me?

And just for fun please see this, my current 560ti vs a 980 http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-980-vs-GeForce-GTX-560-Ti see the 3dmark06 score, 17,512 for the 980 against 16,518 for my poxy 560ti. That is not a very big difference, about 7% or something, although I cannot help but think the 980 would give a lot more that 7% performance gain over my current 560ti with my dx9 game!

So how much attention should I pay to this 3dmark06 score? Yes, I know a bench mark is just a bench mark and not necessarily an answer to everything, but I would like to hear any advice relating getting best performance for dx9 game with modern gfx cards that are actually designed to give best performance to dx10/11/12 not dx9.

2 basic requirements I have are : it must be pci 3.0, and it must be 3gb+ ram, aside from that all I care about is dx9 performance. Would it be wise to find the card with a good 3dmark06 score that is also pci 3.0 and has 3gb+ ram?

Thanks.

Solution
Get either a R 280 or R 380 and call it a day the game will run just fine for that game and you wont break the bank and if you want Nvidia a 960 would be more then enough as well.
I wouldn't rely on such a old benchmark. while it design for direct 9 you more like now to be limit to single core performance with modern graphic card with that program. my 970 was about 2.5-3 time fast then my previous 560ti to give you an idea with newer games. As for graphic card what is you budget. The 380 would probably be a good option for that game though.

Finally a best answer was chosen.

The GTX980 & GTX970 showed some bad graphical issues for rFactor1 (some textures not working correctly).
I hope the cards mentioned especially the GTX960 would show better results
