My Mac Pro 3,1 is dying and I'm not a fan of the new garbage cans, so I decided to build myself a Hackintosh. However, I've been out of the loop for a few years and don't know what is currently good. Here is my initial build, but it is currently over my budget. I have already checked these parts and they are fully compatible with Hackintosh builds:

Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor w/ Noctua NH-D14 65.0 CFM CPU Cooler
Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD3H-BK ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Crucial Ballistix Tactical 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
Samsung 840 EVO 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 4GB Video Card
Corsair Carbide Series 300R Windowed ATX Mid Tower Case
Corsair RM 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
HP DVD1265I DVD/CD Writer

I mostly use the following software in order of the most usage:

Firefox
World of Warcraft
Microsoft Excel
Final Cut Pro
DVD Studio Pro
Da Vinci Resolve
Portal 2
SimCity
After Effects
Photoshop

What can I change to get the total cost of the build down and still have a very powerful machine that will run my programs for another 2-3 years without upgrades?

FYI: World of Warcraft and SimCity are more CPU intensive games than GPU, hence the want for an i7 over an i5.

P.S.: Not included on the list is an extra PCI card I intend to buy separately that has FW800 ports (possibly TB if they make them).

You haven't listed the prices of the hardware, but I would say you could save money by going with a 250GB SSD for the system drive, a cheaper case like the Corsair 200R, and a lower power 500W - 550W PSU. You have to be very careful discussing hackintosh systems on this site since the legality of the systems is a bit of a gray area. Our community manager has given his blessing on these discussions as long as it is for personal use and the OS was legally purchased. See this thread for more information:

Overall price of the build is about US$1500. Can't go with a smaller boot drive since Final Cut Pro takes up a LOT of storage space due to its many plugins. A cheaper case and power supply is a start.

DISCLAIMER: I legally own the Mac OSX Yosemite software and all other software aforementioned in this post. Usage of this software is for personal use only and is in no way used for commercial purposes or financial gain. Furthermore, all hardware listed in this build has been approved for use in Apple devices for upgrades and swaps (OSX is very finicky about what hardware it sees).

The build looks good. It sounds like you've done your research as far as hardware compatibility goes. I also appreciate your disclaimer allowing this discussion to continue. I would just go with a cheaper case and PSU and pull the trigger. It's a very nice setup and should work well for your intended use.
