My GPU QQed. I'm hosting a local Terraria server, mining with the help of excessive use of dynamite currently stood underwater. I throw that TNT and the screen goes black. Not the monitor is off black, but the not really black but trying it's darn hardest to be black black. I switch it off and on, no signal, no dice. I hear the TNT explode, I jump in fear of my little 8bit bro dying from the explosion. Then I remember he's underwater, drowning probably with no arms so I grapple in whatever direction I hope is up, like a drunk on a merry-go-round. Quickly! I try to change the monitor input, no signal again. Wife's playing with me says I'm not dying but my hope is. Help me Ctrl Alt Del you are my only hope! The black stares back at me like gazing into the void of nothingness. My monitor turns off; saving power, even it has given up hope. I hit the reset button, wife's connection has been lost. My eyes are glued to the screen, I'm on my knees, CtrlAltDel has forsaken me don't you do the same POST. Nothing again. But what do my ears hear? The now divine sound of the Windows theme, my guilt for how I hath hatred for thee in ye past! Computer's working but no display, somethings gone wrong in display town. Let's shut off again, disconnect mains power, laptop ready and check the monitor. Laptop is great, monitor obeys it's not the problem. Right, scrubs on, dust mask on, time to c-section this computer and open her up. I peer inside, no burn marks just cobwebs and surface dust. I prise the GPU from its seat and quickly swap with a known working like Indi snatching the little gold statue for a weighted cloth bag. Power on it POSTS my Frankenstein monster and generic Windows drivers is hideous but alive!

Story-time over.
I'm pretty sure my GPU has conked out. Mid-way through playing a game, screen went black, then monitor lost any input. Monitor worked fine as external display for laptop. Replaced GPU with old known working and computer runs fine.

Dead GPU was a Radeon Vapor-X R9 270x 2GB oc.
Current replacement is an old XFX AMD 4850, not even supported for Windows 10 but at least I can get my work done on the generic windows drivers.

My question is what equivalent modern GPU can I get for my granddad rig? I mostly play old games on it (god this makes me feel old) but did tax it a bit. Playing as far back as Diablo II (20 years old o_O) all the way to some 'modern' games like Minecraft, Dark Souls and Skyrim, think xbox 360 era. Where I've really made the old card huff and puff are in the elder scrolls games, Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim modded to breaking point. So if I were to spend as little money as possible, but didn't get a GPU worse than the R9 270x, what would that be today? I've been stung by second hand hardware before so I'd rather avoid it, especially in the pandemic climate.

For reference the specs for the rest of the computer:
i5 750 @ stock 2.66Ghz, air cooled.
ASRock MoBo, not sure which.
8GB Corsair DDR3 RAM.
OCZ ZS Series 750W PSU.
A million HDDs and SSDs to store those sick elder scrolls HD texture packs.
1080p 60Hz IPS monitor with HDMI, DVI-D and D-SUB inputs.

TLDR What's the cheapest modern equivalent of R9 270X?

Solution
Probably the 1050 or 1050ti. I had a R9 280 and when I was thinking of upgrading those were the similar cards to mine. Your 270X shouldn't be that far behind my card.

I wanted to get a 580 when I rebuilt my machine. But I ended up getting the 570. At the time when I bought I just couldn't justify the extra money spent on the 580 when I play games that don't need it. D2, TF2, Red Alert 2, etc. As a $100 card that can drive my older games at 1080 or worse I just didn't need the 580.
