Quick question, is it dangerous to connect a molex to 6 pin pcie to my new GPU, i have turbo x 650w value series power supply, but it have only 1 6+2 pin pcie, and i need 6-pin + 8-pin for the 980 Strix. So can i get that 6 pin with a molex connector or its too dangerous?

Solution

Here are some better quality 550W - 650W PSUs ranked in order of cost (here in US). I wouldn't go any lower than 550W with that GTX 980. But anything over 650W is going to be overkill.

Edit: for some reason when I re-click on my link, Newegg sends me to a "check if I'm a robot" sign in page. Let me know if you are having problems with the link.
That must be a cheap over-rated 650W PSU if it only has a single 6+2 pin PCI connector. That is usually a sign it can't handle the extra load that having a 2nd PCI cable would require. I would recommend against it. It may work, but the longevity of the PSU will suffer, performance may be lower (voltage drop, ripple, etc), and worse case; it may die a catastrophic death taking out other components with it.

But if you can post a pic of the PSU nameplate, I can give a better judgement.

Here you go my friend:

Yeah, that definitely is NOT a 650W PSU with 2 x tiny +12V rails rated for 18a each. Closer to a 300-350W Unit in spite of the label. It shouldn't even have a single 6-pin. I'd be surprised if the GTX 980 would even boot with it. Please don't use that PSU with the GTX 980.

Really, oh lel, i will go get a new PSU then... thanks for the info , so there is no need even to try working with that PSU?

Only at your own risk. There are some really good low cost PSUs available now. $50

Can you suggest me some, are these good

Looks like a 650w PSU to me. Just one that is heavy on the 3.3 volt rail. Typical of older designs. Newer systems rely more on 12 volts. In any even, using a 4-pin molex to 6-pin PCIe is a very bad idea. Would overload that single 12 wire for sure. Get one of the recommended PSU above and you will be golden.

Can a 550W PSU run, i7 4790K / 980 Strix / 16GB ram 2400mhz, two 2TB HDD's, 500GB SSD, and a couple of fans? Because i am thinking to get a 550W Corsair semi Modular Power Supply, 80+ Gold Certified https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-CS550M-Modular-Supply-Certified/dp/B00GH9NA6O , is it a good choice ?

A friend can give me his ATX Corsair TX650W V2 80 PLUS BRONZE, is it good?
- +3,3V: 25A
- +5V: 25A
- +12V: 53A
- -12V: 0,5A
- 5V Stand By: 3A

The 550W Corsair above will be OK as long as you don't OC anything. The 650W Corsair would be better with its stronger 53amp/638Watt +12v rail. You can safely OC with that one.
