Hello,

My 9yo son has offically suprassed me in intelligence and perservance. He's wanted a gaming computer for over a year now. We don't have the income to buy him a quality gaming computer and I refuse to buy one that's in our budget because, from what I understand, they are garbage. He has decided that he wans to build a gaming computer!

He's kind of awesome! He has done a pretty hefty amount of research. I asked my 3 older kids, he included, to make an Amazon christmas wish list. His contsists mainly of computer parts.

Between reaching out to a few of my tech savy friends and reading, I've learned a little bit myself. However, I'm still pretty clueless. Unfortunately I have 4 kids and I don't have the time to really delve into this.

A friend of mine suggested I post his build list here and see if anyone can help cut costs with suggestions. He also said it would be helpful if I list the games my son plans on playing once his computer is up and running.

So far my son has about $650 coming his way for this project. After christmas he will probably have about $800 to work with. That being said, here's his build and top game choices. I would greatly appreicate any advice or thoughts that may benifit him.

TIA

GAME CHOICES:
Rocket League
Forza Horizon3
Overwatch
Portal 2

I know he plans on purchasing most games from Steam. Not sure if that's signficant information.

BUILD:

Intel Core i7

Noctua CPU cooler

MSI B250m Gaming Pro Micro ATX LGA1151- motherboard

Corsair Value Select 16gb DDR4-2133 memory

Samsung 850 EVO series 250 GB SSD

EVGA- GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB SSC Gaming Card

DIYPC- Silence BK Window ATX Mid Tower Case

EVGA 850 W 80+ Bronze semi modular power supply

Creative Labs- Sound Blaster 24 bit 192 KHz sound card

Rough calculations seem that this is going to run him about $1100 just for the tower and guts. New monitor, keyboard, etc will have to come later.

I wish I could get this figure closer to the $800 range without compromising the characteristics of a gaming computer.

Thanks again!

Amanda

Building your own computer is easy. Building it takes 2-3 hours, and installing windows takes about 30mins to 45mins, and after that downloading and installing drivers takes another 30-45 mins. After all that, have it download windows updates at night, it may take a 2-4 passes to get them all.

Installing Windows:

Protip for installing drivers safely, install them one at a time and restart the computer after each install to avoid breaking the OS, which can happen if you try to install them all at once.
