Monitor: 24" 16:9 or 22" 16:10

Hello,

I want to buy a cheap TN monitor and use it as an external monitor for my notebook. Primary use will be for programming and surfing the net and occasionally watching movies. I can't decide between two monitors: one is a 22" 16:10 at 1680x1050 screen resolution and the other one is a 24" 16:9 at 1920x1080 screen resolution. I'd prefer the one with the bigger resolution of course but being 16:9 and having less vertical pixels than 16:10 kind of makes me think twice about it.

Those are standard resolutions. I don't understand your reference to "less vertical pixels".

16:9 and 16:10 do no refer to pixels. They are ratios.

1920 / 16 = 120
1080 / 9 = 120

1680 / 16 = 105
1050 /10 = 105

(the numbers 120 and 105 are not relevant, they just demonstrate the ratio)

The larger monitor has MORE vertical pixels. 30 more. This makes it a true 1080p monitor capable of displaying Blu-ray movies for instance.

What kind of graphics does your notebook have? If it's capable of driving the larger monitor get that.

I was talking about 16:9 vs 16:10 not comparing these two monitors. So the same monitor size 24", a 16:9 has less vertical space than a 16:10 if they have the same resolution (1920x1080 vs 1920x1200).
Sorry, that was kind of unclear I should have explained it better.

My notebook has an intel graphics card 4500MHD.

What do you mean ? I'm connecting it with a VGA cable to my notebook.

Not all laptop graphics can easily handle the larger number of pixels, but that one should be fine.

And to the various sizes, you are still looking at it wrong. The 24" monitor will be slightly taller than the 22", and will be wider.

Since the density of pixels is identical and the vertical pixels are nearly the same, you are just getting a wider monitor. BenQ has a reputation of quality also.
