I am going back and forth trying to decide on which monitor resolution/aspect and GPU I should pair together. Below are my current pc specs

i7-4790 (non K)
Asus q87m
GTX 980 SC
16gb DDR3 1333 RAM

The two monitors I am looking at, but willing to take other suggestions, are the Acer XG270HU 27" or a LG 34UC79G-B 34". Acer is 1440p with 144hz and the LG is 21x9 1080p 144hz.

I am not a hardcore pc gamer by any sense but the games I do play are AAA such as Tomb Raider, Witcher 3, GTA V, Destiny 2, etc. I know my 980 won't push the limit on refresh rate or FPS but I am looking at maybe down the road adding another 980 or selling mine and bumping to a 980ti or 1070. My current monitors are some crappy Gateways (two of them) I got on sale years ago and only have DVI connections. I like multi monitor setup because I multi task a lot but thought a 21x9 34" display would make it so I didn't need two and a bit concerned if I go with the Acer the 1440p on one display and 1080p on one Gateway will look like crap.

Any suggestions would be welcomed. Thanks so much in advance.

For the games your playing you don't need a 144 refresh rate their more for twitch shooter games.

60 refresh rate IPS 1440p monitor.
My GTX 980 runs my 1440p and 1080p monitors just fine.

Agreed, 144hz not worth the extra $$ if you aren't playing CS:GO etc. 27" 16:9 1440p @60hz will be a good combo for a 980ti.

Personally I would get a 27" or 32" 1440p over 34" ultrawide. Purely because decent 27" are cheaper. Ultrawide is nice, but not a deal breaker for me. As you say its personal preference.
