Monitor and tv hookup issue

My problem: Just bought a 39" magnavox v series tv. I plugged into my pc which has an acer monitor connected through dvi. When i plug in the tv through hdmi the tv takes over the display. Ive tried extending, duplicating, etc but the only result while the tv is plugged in and on is that the display comes in on the tv only If i run detect or identify it doesnt find both. If i unplug the hdmi or turn off the tv the display goes right back onto the acer monitor. It doesnt seem to be able to detect both monitors plugged in at the same time. Ive done this before on other systems and have never had a problem. my graphics card is an onboard Ati radeon hd4250

Your onboard graphics will support VGA + DVI or VGA + HDMI. It will not support HDMI + DVI. So if you want to use both monitors, you need to use VGA on the small monitor and HDMI/DVI on the big one.
