Monitor cable help

I've bought two cables now for my pc to monitor,
One was a dvi 24+5 to vga
Which didn't work
And the other was dvi to dvi 24+1
Which didn't work should I just use the cable I already have and just use the motherboard outputs or should I buy a adapter or something

I don't use the 2nd monitor for gaming only for watching videos
But I do use it for when I edit video to have the playback on the 2nd monitor and the 1st monitor have all the editing bits etc !

I want to know does it make a big difference in colour and performance if I used it on the motherboard not the gpu

Which specific ports (connections) does your GPU have? DVI-D, DVI-I, HDMI, Displayport, VGA? If you have a DVI-D and tried to connect to a VGA port on a monitor, you will get no signal, as the DVI-D only outputs a digital signal. DVI-I however does output an analogue and digital signal. Google DVI-D vs DVI-I and look for some images to help you identify what ports your GPU has. What specific model is your GPU?

Generally if you have a GPU you should use it rather than your motherboard video ports, to save cpu and RAM resources. Depending on your CPU and GPU it may not make much of a difference.

My gpu had dp port, vga and dvi 24 +1 pin, hdmi which is taken

My motherboard has - dvi 24+1 and vga

i do not have a vga port on my gpu i put it as a mistake sorry !

I think you need an adapter cable like this one:

That is assuming your monitor will accept a digital signal into the DVI 24 + 5 port. What is the make and model # of your monitor? If it only accepts an analogue signal, then the above won't work. DVI-D stands for digital (24+1) DVI-I stands for Integrated (digital and analogue). The extra 4 pins on the 24+5 carry the analogue signal.

Yes that will convert the digital signal to analogue. Of course you will still need a VGA cable to connect from the converter into your monitor, but you probably already have that.
