From personal experience would you rate the Dell 17" ultra sharp
1704FPT $300 better than the 17" E173FP .

Thanks for your input

What are you going to use it for?

I've seen them both. If you're just looking for basic, sit in front of the
screen type viewing, then probably not worth the $300.

The 1740FPT has features not found on the lower priced version. Digital AND
analog input, adjustable height, rotating head, USB ports, etc. All
meaningless if you don't need or care about them. The performance is better
on the FPT too but if you again, don't need high perfromance, then you won't
see the difference.

IMO, spending good money on a monitor is money well spent because you spend
so much time in front of it (maybe) and it can always be moved to a new
system. I think most monitors outlast the systems they come with.

My 2 cents anyways, YMMV.

Thank you for your input. Person does basic computer things, word
processing, excel, surfing, basic power point, and editing home
digital photos. What they are mainly concerned about is the clarity
(easily read text & friendly on the eyes) and digital pictures that
are color true. I assume when you say "high performance" you mean
faster refresh rate. Would that apply to what they want to do?

If you watch Techgains or Fatwallet they will post when the really good
deals on Dell stuff is available, sales plus special limited coupons pop up
all the time there, picked up my present Dell 1905fp (19" Ultra) for $317
with free shipping a couple weeks ago.. As far as the monitor goes, it
replaced my 19" Dell P991 CRT and I couldn't be happier... Love the clean
look, sound bar and the usb ports on the monitor itself..

Don't know. Doubt it. But why $300 more?? I just ordered the
19" 1905FP for $300 *total*. Okay, $324 including tax.

Go to the Dell small business site, order it at $499, and add the
40% off coupon code from ecoupons.com. Or just enter the code:
BV9QW3GBZBNGCG

The only negatives I can see to this monitor are the 20ms
response. Some say not an issue, others say a problem for games
and video. I have my fingers crossed.

Given those very basic uses I would say they would most likely be perfectly
happy with the lower priced LCD and $300 in their pocket. They might toss
out a few more bucks for the 19" version (if they have the room) but a 17"
is not all that bad.

Dell actually has a nice comparison of the features and performance info
when you click on the "Help Me Choose" link in the monitor selection area.

Here's a free 19" monitor with the 8400! Not too bad for $649!! Free
shiiping too. (Small Business)
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=04&kc=6W300&l=en&oc=1d84h11&s=bsd

They might want to consider the speakers that clip to the monitor too.
Saves space and sound isn't good for basic needs.

I don't have any experience with the E173FP, but I played around with
a 1704FPT for a few days (connected to a x300 SE equipped 4700).
IIRC it is a 12ms typical, 6-bit TN+Film panel. I found it pretty good
for gaming, but in terms of color reproduction, said combination wasn't
very good out of the box. I think I tried playing around with brightness,
contrast, and gamma adjustments, but didn't get very far. But then I
don't know much about color calibration and don't own a calibrator.
LCD panels generally lag CRTs in the color department, and supposedly
the 6-bit panels are some of the worst. But perhaps said combo could
have been tweaked to produce better colors than what I was getting.

I see others have mentioned the 1905FP. FWIW, that is a 20ms typical
8-bit PVA panel which has received pretty good reviews (AnandTech
did one). Being a 19" the pixel pitch isn't great, but it has one potentially
major advantage over other panels. Alot of people are used to and prefer
1024x768 on a 19" CRT and use that as a reference. LCDs look best,
and arguably only look better than good CRTs, when run at their native
resolution. When compared to said reference, 17" and larger LCDs
produce noticeably smaller text when run at native with default Windows
display settings. In terms of text size, a 19" LCD @ native 1280x1024 is
a tad smaller than a 19" CRT running at 1152x864, but things are crisper
and alot of people find the smaller size tolerable. Other LCDs produce
even smaller text at native, and many find that intolerable.

Seems pretty pricy - I bought a 17" 1704 FPVs from Dell's outlet center
about 6 weeks ago for $229 (and well spent, too, IMHO).

What are you doing with the P991?

Sparky says "What are you doing with the P991?"
Not sure of the question?? I had a P991 with my old XPST system...
Replaced the monitor first since the P991 is dieing a slow death and a few
days later replaced my XPST system with a 8400.. Got another great deal on
that too, 8400 W/ 3.2 P4, 1000 Ghz memory, floppy drive, 80 gig HDD, dual
DVD writers, 128mb ATI Vid card for $450 at the outet, that included a $$
off promotion which runs every so often...

Oh, maybe I missed the part about how the P991 is failing. I'm curious
because I replaced my fully functional P991 with a 1905FP 6 months ago &
still haven't decided what to do with it.

Sparky,
Damn, just put a bid on a new Dell 17" last night on ebay, going to use my
old XPST system for the kids to use.. Would have bought that P991 off you :)
... So far I'm the only bidder on it, figured for a second system $44 for a
brand new 17" Dell monitor still in sealed box was a good deal, that is if
the bidding doesn't go up in the next few hours...
How long have you had the P991, I've seen at Dell's support there has been
quite a few people who had the same problems as I with the P991, wondering
if they had a bad lot.. Mine is 5 years old, it's so bad now that if I turn
the brightness up over 70% it shuts down not to mention the picture is
horrible, tried adjusting everything on the monitor and through the graphics
card... just shot I guess..

Does sound like a good deal.

Mine will by 5 on 05/15/2005. It was working fine when I unplugged it 6
months ago. I'm a "don't turn the computer off" guy if you think that
might make a difference.
