Monitor display PROBLEM need help

I was just on my computer and then my monitors suddenly go into standby mode as if the computer was switched on however the computer was still on. I tried resetting the cmos but to no prevail, I am now assuming that it is an issue with my gpu however it is quite new and is a amd Radeon 290x . Wondered before I go further how to check what the real issue is. Thanks

Remove the GPU and test the monitor on integrated graphics (if your computer supports it). If you have your old video card you could test that. If you have another monitor in the house you could try that or try connecting via HDMI (or VGA/DVI if the TV has an input) to an HDTV.
