Monitor filter

Before I go and spend $25 on a monitor filter, I just need to know do they really work? IE - do they make a big difference in terms of the contrast & also I've been on the computer ALOT lately and have been getting some huge headaches - do monitor filters prevent headaches caused by staring at the screen for too long?

From previous personal experiance only I have found I get more headaches in a dark room as opposet to a well lit room also taking a break every 20-30 mins help as well. By the way what refresh rate are you using?
