Monitor flashed black after unplugging external USB hard drive

So after a gaming session I switched off my external hard drive no problem, but when I unplugged it from the front panel USB 3 port my monitor flashed black then back to normal in the space of 1-2 seconds. I'm guessing this isn't normal, what could cause this and is it worth worrying about?

EVGA GTX 970 OC
8GB RAM
120GB SSD
EVGA 500w 80+ PSU
ASRock B150M HDS mobo

I get it sometimes, momentary loss of video signal when plugging/unplugging one of my three ext. HDDs.

It's too minor to bother investigating, don't worry about it.
