Hi im looking for a great monitor that goes with my GPU, apparently 144hz is great so i would like it to have that. Im willing to pay max $700 AUD ive been looking at the ASUS ROG SWIFT pg248q anyway please give me suggestions. cheers

There are PROS and CONS to consider:

1) 60Hz vs 144Hz:
144Hz is "better" however you'll need to carefully consider how to setup games. You can't afford GSYNC likely, and you are NOT going to run every game at a solid 144FPS.

One of the best options in this case is to set a game to 72FPS via Adaptive VSYNC (HALF) method.

NCP-> manage 3d settings-> add game-> ... half adaptive vsync-> save (and verify it locks to 72FPS).

*Adaptive means it disables VSYNC automatically so TWEAK the settings to strike a balance of how often you drop below 144FPS (Adaptive VSYNC) or 72FPS (Half Adaptive VSYNC). maybe 5% of the time you drop. experiment.

also,
Some games need to run at 60FPS so investigate that (i.e. some Bethesda games).

2) RESOLUTION?
I prefer 2560x1440 if possible. Far better for desktop and games with small test/hud (i.e. CIV5, Star Citizen etc).

3) Size?
27" is ideal for many.

4) IPS, TN etc?
IPS ideally

5) Refresh?
6ms is my MAXIMUM

6) GSYNC?
Awesome, but also expensive.

It gets more complicated, but I'll post this and look closer at what's available.

Monitors:

1) $800au (over budget): https://au.pcpartpicker.com/product/c298TW/asus-monitor-mg279q

I included it though because it met mostly all the checkmarks.
- 2560x1440, 27"
- IPS, 4ms
- 144Hz

It also has Freesync though you can't benefit without an AMD GPU. The GSYNC version of this monitor costs more (and is arguably BETTER in color response due to the dedicated GSYNC MODULE but that's another discussion).

2) https://au.pcpartpicker.com/product/xRGj4D/asus-monitor-mx27aq

This one is only 60Hz, but it is within budget.

Other:
Sure, there are 1080p monitors within budget at higher refresh rate but again I would personally set 2560x1440 as a "must have" with a GTX1080. I've got a 2560x1440, 60Hz monitor and a GTX1080 and I'd rather you give me a crappier video card than give me a 1080p, 144Hz monitor instead. I need the PIXELS.

That has FREESYNC, not GSync.

It's basically the same as the $800au model I linked but it has a lesser TN panel instead of IPS (IPS has better color accuracy and doesn't fade as much when viewed on an angle).

Yeah, that's a typo on my part, mb. :p

Recommendation
This is a simple answer. https://www.newegg.com/global/au/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009908&cm_re=predator-_-24-009-908-_-Product
There you go. 144Hz is great and 1080p is more than enough. Plus it will future proof your rig if you stay at 1080p.

Screen size recommendation
I say 24" is more than enough its actually a little big for me. I sit 2 feet from the monitor (Edited Reason: measured it with a measuring tape) and I have to move my eyes to see the edges of the screen like the map on dota. Compared to my 21" inch where i could see everything with peripheral vision. I have since moved it to the edge of my desk rather than in front of me. Now I can view everything just fine at 3 feet

but if you want 27" here https://www.newegg.com/global/au/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009989&cm_re=predator-_-24-009-989-_-Product
G-Sync
Gsync is freaking amazing. I have an Acer XB240H 144Hz 1ms(refurbished) which is the model just below the predator it has G-sync but none of the gaming features. The Gsync literally removes all the frame drop perception. I can play a game and it can drop from 120 to 60 and I wont notice it visually, it literally transitions so smoothly. Although drop like that would be rare on a 1080. ( I myself am so used to playing at 100+ that i notice any drop below 80fps by how the game feels).

Please Note that anything above 144FPS will be handled by Vsync not Gsync. I have playd games at 200FPS with V-sync off and experienced no tearing or problems.

Conclusion
The predator is the best gaming monitor out there look at all the features it has for gaming. Overlays for better accuracy on FPS games. And so much more.

Thoughts on Acer
Acer is a great company. My refurbished model has been working amazingly. It came with no scratches on any of the piano finished parts. Plus my refurb came with a 3 year warranty fro the manufacturer (acer) . To give a 3 yr warranty on a refurb it is easy to notice that this is a company that trusts itself and has high standards.

IPS or TN
I say unless you are photoshopping and need extreme color and perfect picture quality TN is fine.
there are some predator IPS panels Although they are $300AUD over your set price.

why is gsync a silly purchase? It works great for me at 1080p.

also I do not know australian sites. I am using newegg to simply showcase the product. I am sure he can google or w/e they do in Australia for better pricing.

G-Sync is a silly purchase at 1080p for several reasons.
Say you have enough cash for an GTX 1060 6GB i5 build right?
You then decide to get a G-Sync 1080p 144hz panel.
Now given that G-Sync adds a solid $100 premium to the monitor, that cash can be spent to upgrade to a GTX 1070, giving you a 40% performance increase.
Now would you rather have 40% more performance or a feature which minimises FPS stutter at sub 60FPS?
Why bother with that when you can get significantly more frames? It becomes pointless.

sub 60 FPS? He has a GTX 1080... (did you even Read The Title of his question??)what are you bringing up 1060s and 1070s? G-sync works all the way up to the monitor's refresh rate 1-144hz. not only on sub 60Frames...

Also if you think refresh rate and Gysnc is such a problem on a 1080 the only problem you'd get is going over 144Frames then having to use Vsync.

If you want more frames here https://www.newegg.com/global/au/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824011097&cm_re=acer_predator-_-24-011-097-_-Product

24.5" 240hz G-Sync. and well within his budget.

Also G-sync is not only for smooth transitions it removes the input lag. So you can play at 60frames and have input response well above that. With my razer naga polling rate at 1000 input means a lot especially in dota. I used to hate 60fps on my old laptop because it would affect my last hits. I had to lower all the graphics to get 120.

Also the eye tracking technology on some of the predators like this one https://www.newegg.com/global/au/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16824009989 is Amazing for shooters.

You say that G-sync or w/e money is best spent on better things. Yes it is The predator is that better upgrade. He already has a GTX 1080 and he has a budget for a screen. The predator XB2 XB252Q 140hz is one of the best screens he can find for gaming. 240hz is 240 frames that is more than enough for a 1080 on g-sync. Although I still say stick to 144hz. The predators also feature good overclocking capability you can get 180hz on most.

My previous recommendations are still what I say would be best. Especially for future proofing and great quality and gaming features.
24" https://www.newegg.com/global/au/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009908&cm_re=predator-_-24-009-908-_-Product
27" https://www.newegg.com/global/au/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16824009989

I'm talking hypothetically so I can put it into a different context for future use.
With a 1080 only a 144hz 1080p screen is out of the question since it'll demolish that easily.
A 240Hz 1080p or 144hz 1440p is the only way to get the most out of his graphics card.
There's also an Australian pcpartpicker if you want to use that.

I did offer a 240hz... screen

But 144hz is MORE THAN ENOUGH look at the damn benchmarks of 1080p highest settings witha GTX 1080 FTW

if he gets 1440p at the end of the year his 1440p 144hz will be running at 60 frames....
With 1080p he can future proof his rig. To continue to run past 60FPS on the highest settings.

just look at the 1440p frames on a GTX 1080 FTW

These are last years triple A games. Just think about it... by the end of this year his 1440p will be too much.

Do some research befor answering questions.
All your claims are invalid ass science you do not even explain them or link to proof.
You talk hypothetically about 1060's and 1070s that he doesn't have... you claim 1440p 144 hz is the only way to get the most of his 1080? You have no proof. I do look at the benches he will not even reach 144 frames on a GTX1080 with max setttings1440p. You claim G-sync is a waste? 144hz 1440p that extra hz is a waste.

also pc part picker does not have the latest Predator models on their list.... Or I would have used it. If newegg is such a hassle he can easily use the model numbers and shop around.

IMHO, buying a 1080p monitor today is not a wise move especially if you have anything better than a 1070 video card.

Here is a good link that explains both 1080 and 1440 and 4k. And when you should move to the higher levels. And saying 1080 is furture proofing makes me laugh. In 2-3 years, there will be the next level of DIRECTX that is required for newer games, so you would have to upgrade your video card anyways. So get the best monitor you can now.

this is all that shows up for me...
Acer's Website has 11 different models of the predator.

They don't even show the 24" models or the 240hz models...

And none of the 1080p models show up...

Amazon global shipping is apparently free when I selected my country as Australia.
I'm tired of searching for Australian stores. I am sure the OP knows of Australian Electronic stores and can shop around using the model numbers. (model numbers are in bold)
Acer Predator XB241H 24" 1080p 144hz 1ms TN
Acer Predator Z271 27" 1080p 144hz 1ms TN
Acer Predator XB2 XB252Q (UM.KX2AA.001) 24.5" 1080p 240hz 1ms

Here are the ones I recommended in my first post... on amazon global. And it says they ship free to Australia.
27" https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01NAU1JEM/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

24" 240Hz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N34Q6LF/?tag=mh0b-20&hvadid=77996621260388&hvqmt=p&hvbmt=bp&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_2gmoruiucc_p

I used an Australian University as the address.

I doubt the prices are in AUD. sadly the 24" 144hz (https://www.newegg.com/global/au/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009908&cm_re=predator-_-24-009-908-_-Product) doesn't ship to Australia on Amazon.
