pimpin-tl :
IMHO, buying a 1080p monitor today is not a wise move especially if you have anything better than a 1070 video card.
Here is a good link that explains both 1080 and 1440 and 4k. And when you should move to the higher levels. And saying 1080 is furture proofing makes me laugh. In 2-3 years, there will be the next level of DIRECTX that is required for newer games, so you would have to upgrade your video card anyways. So get the best monitor you can now.

GTX 1080 and DX12
The GTX 1080 FTW gets 65 FPS on ashes of the singularity 1080p.... which is DX12 in 2-3 years when the 'next level of direct X' starts to become a norm. First of all the msot popular games will allow you to use lower direct x versions. But then again... The GTX 1080 gains performance when running DX12 over DX11
I already posted the benchmarks....
but if you want you can find more benches here but they are using founder edition.

GTX 1080 DX12 4k vs QHD vs FHD(1080p) Performance Comparison
When DX12 becomes the norm the GTX1080 will apparently gain performance from it...
This means: He will easily run "Next level DIRECTX"
but 144hz QHD and 4K ? Why... It is unlikely he will even reach 120 Frames at those resolutions with max settings. Yes 1080p will future proof your rig. My previous rig Had a GTX460m I could only play the newest games at 720p ....
I am pretty sure resolution is the most taxing setting for your Graphics card... 1080p still looks Awesome to me, the prices are lower, and you can get all the nice features. All while having a screen that still looks great. When all the games start becoming 4K and QHD enabled. well the benchmarks can speak for themselves.
4K
QHD
1080p
Look at that huge difference 139 Frames in 1080p 46.6 Frames in 4k!
Futureproof?
Yes 1080p will allow him to stay above 100 frames even in 2 years. likely will have to lower the graphics a little
But the other Resolutions, will likely run at around 60 frames or less with graphics settings lowered a bit.
So why QHd or 4K?
So why would he want a costly QHD or 4k 144Hz screen? (unless he is ok with changing graphics card ever 2 years)
A 1080p screen costs less and he can actually take advantage of the 144Hz for a longer time. The GTX1080 struggles at 4K to maintain 60frames already. In 1-2 years it will likely struggle to maintain 60 frames at QHD. But 1080p will likely stay around 100.
Plus the money he saves from not getting such high Resolutions can allow him to get nice features on his monitor like the eye tracking on the predator. As well as the several overlays it includes and the ability to save setting for different games using the screen's game profiles. He can even get a curved screen. A curved screen at QHD with G-sync 144hz 1ms is easily more than double the cost.
EDIT
I will no longer reply until the OP replies...
