We'll be hooking a DSLR camera to a monitor outdoors (dry, hopefully in the shade, annual event=limited use/budget). The monitor will be used for composing a picture (e.g. is everyone in the picture? not viewing pictures, so quality is not that critical). We're probably looking for something in the 22"-30" range meaning large computer monitor or small TV monitor.

Any suggestions on 1) TV vs Computer Monitor? 2) Other technical specs we should be looking (out) for?

Thanks!!

One with a higher cd/m rating would be brightest, should be move visible. LED backlight should help also, but those are more expensive. If you find one with about 350 cd/m it's bright and should be OK in light.
A large monitor is much more expensive than a small TV. Get something from craigslist, will save you a bunch over a new one. A new 26" LCD TV is around $200. http://www.walmart.com/browse/TV-Video/TVs/_/N-96v3Z1yzp732?ic=48_0&ref=428799+4292594462&catNavId=1060825&povid=cat3996-env428304-moduleA112211-lLinkLHNShopTVbySize221to29, so a used one should be close to half that.
