Anyone help me pick out a monitor from my local store? It's primarily gonna be used for gaming. So I want a 27" and since 1080p will look a bit... "pixely", I want a 1440p display, 60hz or 144hz (doesn't really matter), 5ms or lower, and maybe an IPS panel (though it isn't that important to me because I'm gonna sit directly in front of it, so don't care for viewing angles). Now for my budget, it can range from $200 ~ 700. My local store is:

tigerdirect.pr

Thanks

The panel arguments are basically silly as it's almost never done apples and apples. When we hear that IPS does better color, it's often less about IPS versus TN as it is about color depth. Yes, an 8 bit IPS (most common config) will do color reproduction better than your typical 6 bit TN. But the Swift is an 8 bit TN panel so will have just about the same ability to produce colors as an 8 pin IPS panel. Of course there are 10 bit IPS panels but having the discussion w/o including whether it's 6, 8 or 10 bit is not going to result in a reliable answer.

The Swift is a great monitor... a year ago it was **the** gaming monitor to have. But today, it's the XB270HU bprz whose price varies daily. Since my original post, it's gone...
At $750 you could have **the** best gaming monitor and the only monitor to date I have ever recommended for gaming. The combination of 144 Hz, G-Sync, and ULMB eliminates the lag and ghosting issues from 30 fps all the way up to 120. But Tigerdirect tends to run a bit pricey and not in stock. Amazon has it for $720. Most vendors having trouble keeping them in stock.

If you are an AMD card user, the Freesync version is TN and comes in at about $500 ... no IPS and no ULMB tho. Make sure you get a version 2 model tho (see big yellow box in article here:) A TN G-Sync version is also available

The G-Sync module only works on monitors designed to accept and have the mounting hardware for it. The onlt one I know ever made that way was the Asus Vg248QE and the actual modules were only available for a short time. I intended to add one, when they came out for $200 I said I'll wait till the price came down. It never did and shortly thereafter they were unavailable.

Given the $140 price difference between the Asus Freesync and the Predator w/ G-Sync / ULMB, I wonder how much is for G-Sync and how much is for ULMB ?

It's a worldwide corporation with operations in US CA UK IE DE AT CH IT FR BE NL SE ES PT most of which carry the same stuff. The PR store is a bit of a PITA as it doesn't categorize the monitors by usage. You can take the model numbers linked to above and just copy / paste them into your PR store.

What cards are you using ? Obviously, nVidia cards lean to G-Sync equipped monitors, and AMD Freesync.

The other problem w/ the PR source is that it adds up to $200 to some monitor costs. The Acer G-Sync XB model I referenced above is $895 on the PR site / $720 on Amazon

The ACER XB270HL I linked to above in can be found at

But for $80 more.

Oh yeah sorry. Nvidia cards. Should i just pick up the asus rog swift? Is its tn panel that bad? I know the rog swift is a bit out of budget but whatever

Tho from one of the alternate sources, still cabn get it fir $720.

It's not the best gaming monitor because it is IPS ... it's the best gaming monitor because the combination of 144 Hz, G-Sync and ULMB combined, overcome the otherwise inherent lag and ghosting limitations of IPS when gaming.

Now with the Acer at $720, frankly I no longer see the Swift worth its original asking price of $795.... now I see it as $675 maybe. However, it's $895.99 on your site

For $170, I think i would have amazon ship it to you....or contact TigerDirect.pr and ask them .... I don't see why they would have the 4k model and not the 1440p G-Sync model other than Acer having trouble keeping up with demand... perhaps it is just outta stock.

ASUS ROG SWIFT PG278Q 27" 3D LED Monitor - 2560 x 1440 QHD, 350 cd/m2, 100000000:1 (dynamic), 1 ms, DisplayPort, black

Price: $895.99

That's $225-250 more than I'd spend on the Swift.... and I said that when the Acer was $790. The Acer goes in and outta stock every few days on newegg and newegg does ship to Puerto Rico. Heck, have someone fly down with one from Miami .... the flight costs less than the tigerdirect cost premium :)
