Monitor goes black, pc still running

Here are the issues I am having with my monitor.
1. the screen is very dark and very difficult to see. brightness is cranked up.
2. monitor goes black, comes back on after turning the monitor off and on again, then goes black again.
3. I have read the other posts and I will try the power settings, if I can see the screen.
4. is this a virus or GPU issues? I have AVG free, SpyHunter, and RegHunter.

Sounds like the backlight or inverter in the display is dying. You're saying you can still see what's on the display, but it's dark?

Likely new display time.

tried another monitor with DVI to DVI cable, everything is good. the tower has a graphics card with DVI and the old monitor did not appear to like it.
