Monitor keeps changing resolution

This has been annoying me for the past two hours.
I am using an HDMI to VGA Adapter. I've used it in the past and never had any issues.

So, I plug it into my monitor, and it says input not supported.

So I plug in a second monitor and the first monitor comes on.

I unplug the second monitor and it goes off.

I uninstall nvidia drivers, monitor drivers, reboot. Works fine. Nvidia driver installs, back to ground zero.

Uninstall nvidia drivers once again, make sure my monitor drivers are correct. Install nvidia drivers it goes off again.

Of course, plugging in the second monitor still causes the screen to turn on at the desired resolution for the monitor. 1280x1024.

It seems whenever I unplug the second monitor, it forces the main monitor to 1920x1080. I've tried safe mode, disabling the other monitor, changing nvidia settings, etc. Don't know what else to do. I do not wish to keep the second monitor plugged into this computer as I need the second monitor for another computer. Thoughts?

I fixed it actually. Ugh took another hour today, but I managed to figure out that I had to disable the monitor within the Nvidia Control Panel, not from Windows in order to have the resolution stick. The weird thing is, even with the proper drivers installed, Windows still thought it was a 1920x1080p monitor, which is obviously due to having an HDMI to VGA adapter. I have multiple VGA monitors (I get some hardware from work when they throw out old equipment) and free is better than paying $100 for a low end HDMI monitor than buying a $5 adapter.

This being said, if anyone has this issue, I guess this is how you fix it.
