Monitor loses signal and freezes after 5 minutes of gaming???

Okay so pretty big problem here that I'm slightly upset about. A few weeks back, randomly playing MW2, my monitor loses signal, screen goes black, and computer completely locks up, have to shut off with power button. Think nothing of it, try again, same thing, Check for new drivers, already have them, try again, same thing. Uninstall all drivers, install new ones, same thing. Pull up Catalyst Control Center while attempting to play MW2, BF3, WoW, etc and notice my temp is skyrocketing. Check my video card and notice my fan is broken, bummer. It should be noted that I could never get more than 5 minutes into a game without this happening but only when gaming on any game, not during browsing, YouTube, etc.

So Black Friday rolls around and I buy a 7850 2gb that was on sale, since my fan was broken in my old card. Finally arrives today, install it, update drivers, all excited that I can get back to gaming after about a month or so, get about 10 minutes into BF3 and bam, screen goes black, sound is frozen on a gunshot, and computer freezes. I have now completely exhausted all of my little computer knowledge and have nowhere to go. Is my monitor bad? Motherboard? Did I miraculously get 2 bad cards back to back? What do you guys think?

You don't list what power supply you have. That could be a problem.

The monitor can be ruled out as that would not cause the system to freeze up.

Is your CPU overclocked? If so try running it at stock speeds and voltages. Also, try running IBT (Intel Burn Test) - http://majorgeeks.com/IntelBurnTest_d5987.html

Select the maximum and let it run. If your system locks up, fails or the screen goes black then the issue is with your CPU, RAM, PSU or Motherboard.

If you can pass that, then I would try stressing the video card a bit with Furmark - http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/

Run the burn-in test at whatever the highest resolution your monitor supports and see what happens. If it can pass the 15 minute test then your video card is fine as it places very little stress on the rest of the system.

Things like this are hard to figure out without some trial and error. Those two programs should help narrow down what is causing the issue.

Thanks for the advice. Power supply is about 3 years old (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151034). CPU is not overclocked, just stock. I ran both programs and had not problems in either one, did the 15 minutes burn in test in Furmark and maintained just fine with a temperature right below 60* C. Also ran the CPU test, results below:

Again, thanks for the advice/help. Is there a program where I can test to see if my PSU is functioning at 100%, since as of now that is the only thing left if I'm not mistaken?

I would say at this point it's likely driver related.

Try uninstalling AMD catalyst, then restart your system. Then reinstall using the latest drivers from AMD.

Restart after this is finished, (you may have to anyways). Test under BF3 again and see if issue persists.

Solution : Reinstall os. if many times driver is updated or uninstalled driver files are corrupt in os its also Happen quicker for gamers.

It happens with virtually every game on my system, however it can take much longer. On the graphically "intense" games like MW3 or BF3, it takes 2-5 minutes. However, I played LA Noire, GTA IV, and some others for over a half an hour before it happened.

Also, I did it with my case door off today so I could immediately look in and view the video card when it happened, I noticed that once the screen went black and the PC froze, my video card also ceased functioning. Both fans shut down, but it wasn't hot or anything? Once I forced manual reboot, it ran perfectly until the next time I attempted to game and same thing. . .

Thinking of switching the card into a different slot in my motherboard to see if that makes a difference, although doubtful. I'm basically all out of answers, and as of now it appears I just will not be able to use my $1300 computer for anything other than browsing.

Well try to download driver sweeper. Uninstall drivers and install the latest beta drivers. Good luck

I have a problem with symptoms identical to yours. I have a Dell XPS with 2 1GB Nvidia video cards in SLI. I started having this problem after I started using a UPC battery backup. I thought it was a power issue since my supply is 750W and I think the backup is only rated for 350W so I changed to plugging it directly into the wall. Still had the problem. I thought maybe it was a driver issue so I went the extra 9 yards and completely wiped the hard drive and re-installed everything with fresh drivers but still the problem occurs, like you only when playing various games. I re-seated all the cards and memory and dusted the whole thing out completely and still the problem continues. I tried going down to just one video card and this seemed to help, at least for playing older games like Everquest but as soon as I tried playing Guild wars II it started happening again almost immediately. I am at the point where I want to pull and test the power supply but I saw this thread was a little old and was wondering if you ever figured it out. I am so convinced it is my PSU that I will probably just buy a new one even if it does test good.

Unfortunately my problem has never gotten fixed. I tried everything listed above and then some more things, but I am left with a $1500 PC that I am unable to do any gaming on. The only solution I can come up with that I know will (should) fix everything is to buy both a new power supply and a motherboard. That should wipe out any sort of issues since the video card is still brand new. Sorry to be of no help. It's funny, if you google this problem (black screen while gaming, have to force restart) you come up with hundreds of topics all over the internet. But never is there any solution, or at least no concrete solution. Hopefully one day. . .

I have the similar problem and i bought my pc a 3 days ago,3 DAYS!
So i have a core i5,Ati 7750 graphics card,gigabyte a75 D3h motherboard,Transend 4 gb DDR3 ram,corrsair 450W power supply a normal casing.

My personal point of view is that the whole thing is happening for the cooling,so since i have warranty im gonna change the whole thing next week.
Or could it be the motherboard? not being able to utilize everything?

if anyone comes with a solution lemme know

Well, I finally fixed my problem. I tried so many things but when I finally removed both video cards and put in an old GTX 8800 that I had from an older system everything started working like normal. I can even play all the latest games again. I have no idea how but both my old video cards had something wrong with them. I even tried using them one at a time and still had the same problem. I guess the stock video cards I got from Dell were crapped out after a little over 1 year. I don't know if that really helps anyone. Good luck to you all.
