I've never used a monitor where it would make a constant humming noise. The only time the monitors that I've used make noise is when you're turning them on/off, or changing the resolution, refresh rate, etc.

Sometimes mine makes a high pitch noise. Lightly tapping on the screen makes it stop. But never a constant noise. Is it still under warranty? If so try sending in.

A low buzzing sound usually comes from the power regulation circuits. It can be a sign of imminent failure, it can also continue for years without any problems.

A high whine suggests a resonating component. Very annoying but usually harmless. If tapping the screen cures it, you may be able to prevent it completely by changing the refresh rate or resolution. Also by altering the resonant frequency of the monitor (stick some gum between the swivel stand and the monitor; place the monitor on a cloth or a piece of felt; support it by additional methods), weird things like this sometimes work.
