ok so the issue is that the monitor is turned on but it is not displaying what it is supposed to. this is the case when it is connected to my nvidia 9600gt; the system boots and all the fans are working(including the one on the gpu). when i switch to onboard graphics it works fine, it also works on my nvidia 6200.
I tried the nvidia 9600 gt on my friends pc and it works fine.

You've done a good job of diagnosis. My first guess would have been that your graphics card slot is damaged, since the card works in another machine. Do I understand correctly that 1) The 9600 works in a different machine, and 2) the 6200 works in the slot where the 9600 fails?

Can you also provide information about which OS you are using and drivers? When you switched graphics cards, did you go back to the default drivers and then install the drivers specific to the card? If you never installed the drivers for the 9600 GT on the first PC that might be an issue.

Also, when you say that it's not displaying what it's supposed to, is it blank? All yellow? Streaked? Showing old reruns of Bozo the Clown?
