Monitor not receiving signal from laptop when plugged in and going into power save

I have a monitor plugged into my laptop (lenovo y50) with windows 8.1 and when it is connected it does not receive any signal. It is connected with a hdmi to dvi-d cable that is fully functional. Also if i plug it into my tv solely using a hdmi cable then it will display onto my tv so it is not the port or my graphics card, and if i plug my xbox into the monitor using the exact cord i am now then it will display on the monitor. This is confusing me and has been for the past few days if anyone has any ideas that would be great

Did you setup the laptop to output the video to the second monitor? Try Fn + F3, I think that should be the right hotkey for your model to swap between video output options. Make sure your video card drivers are updated from Lenovo's website.
