Monitor problem lighting 290x

So I have a r9 290 lighting and it's great I love it. But I'm trying to get 2 monitors set up. I have a hdmi for my main and I'm trying to use my old set up which was with a vga to vga with a dvi-d 24+1 pin going into my gpu please help and tell me what I'm doing wrong I feel like I've tried everything to try and make it work without buying a new monitor
