Monitor problems

I have an old Samsung SyncMaster 773s monitor.Lately, I'm noticing random horizontal shimmering around the edge of the screen.It occurs entirely in a random fashion at any point of time and varies greatly in intensity and duration.It may not occur for weeks but all of a sudden it can occur for a few consecutive days.Sometimes it lasts for 2-3 seconds while at other times it can last up to 30 seconds.I have tried degaussing and it does not help.Checked all the cables and they seem to be fine.Any ideas why this might be happening?

May be time to treat yourself to a new monitor -- might be the power supply on the way out.

Maybe you're right.The monitor is about six years old.But I'm not replacing it until it completely fails.
