monitor receiving no signal when plugged into gpu

Hi, doing my first pc build here. When I try connecting the monitor via hdmi to my motherboard without the gpu being connected by pci slot, the monitor recieves a signal. However when I installed my gpu, the monitor recieved no signal from the motherboard or gpu. Any advice??

Does your GPU require an external power cord rather than relying on PCIex16 power? If so is it plugged in? Also, what GPU is it? And lastly, have you tried using the motherboard graphics while the GPU was installed? That way it can be deduced if the GPU is detected or not.

check if you have the card firmly attached to the pciexpress slot and if you have attached the external power connectors if your gpu requires them.It should work.
