I'm hoping to build a pc this summer. I won't have unlimited desk space and figure that a monitor in the 20-22" range should suffice. For many of the cheaper ones the resolution is or similar to 1680 x 1050. Will this resolution be good for gaming or should I spend a little extra money on a 1080p monitor. If I were to build the computer today I would probably buy a radeon hd 6850 to fit my price range.

For 20"-22" I would prefer 1680 x 1050 since text would be easier to read. It would also mean you would get better performance with the HD 6850.

Is 1080p better than 1680 x 1050 for gaming? That's subjective. Generally speaking, the higher the resolution, the more you can see on the screen, but the more GPU power you will need if you want a certain minimum performance.
