I'm trying to decide between 2 19" monitors. Either the NEC 912SB?Mitsubishi 930SB (I think they are the same) and the Samsung 900NF. I'm not sure of the exact numbers, but the NEC/Mitsu reaches the recommended resolution for a 19" @ 85hz, but the Samsung goes even further. Is there any benefit to be able to go past a certain point, or is it just overkill? I prefer the NEC because it comes in black, they are both around the same price, so I need help deciding.

Thanks

actually you need to find out more details about each. The refresh rate is practically married to the resoulation you want to use.

I have a 17in and a 19in monitor. they both do 1280 by 1024 resolution but the 17in does it 60hz only while the 19in has the abaility to do that resolution in 75hz.

I looked at newer monitors and I usually shop at BestBuy because I have a credit card with them and the financing deals I get on the card are awesome. They carry a viewsonic model a90f+ it has a max resolution of 1792x1344 @ 61Hz but can do 1280x1024 @ 80Hz. They also carry a Compaq Monitor and it's max resolution is 1600 x 1200 @ 75 Hz but can do 1280 x 1024 @ 85 Hz. The price for the Compaq at BestBuy is $399 which is probably because it comes with speakers. the Viewsonic is $299. But the compaq has better capabilies in refresh by 5hz while the viewsonic has better resolutions but at worse resolutions. So which way do you want to go and which one of the two monitors you mentioned will do that for you?

Yes, I made it past newbie w00t.

Ok, most people won't see flicker on any monitor running above 68 hz. So any monitor that will do 70hz at the resolution you want is going to be just fine. Also, if it will do, say, 85hz at your resolution and you run it at 70 instead it's going to run cooler and will probably have better focus and convergence.

The exception is for high frame rate gaming. For this you want higer refresh rates on your monitor...

I'd suggest the NEC over the Samsung, not necessarily because of specs or capabilities, but because NEC has terrific warranty and customer support. They've even read voltage test points out to me over the phone...
