I am trying to choose between the asus z97-a and the z97-e motherboard, and the only major difference i can find that bothers me is the lack of a display port on the z97-e. Although my gpu (asus gtx 970) has one on it. so is there any draw backs to plugging my monitor into my gpu as opposed to my motherboard?

You want to be plugged into the 970, otherwise you are using the iGPU in your CPU

If its not plugged into your gtx 970 then your using the gpu built into your processor not your graphics card. So you have to plug it into the 970
