so i have been using my 27 inch asus for a couple years now with my custom built desktop. they have been working fine, i also have been connecting my desktop to my 65 inch bravia tv and its been working fine. both monitors work together.

then today i tried to connect a hdmi cable to my desktop and all of a sudden my screen goes blank like it just lost connection, even when i remove the hdmi cable it still stays blank. i have to turn off my desktop by holding the on button until it turns off. then i turn it back on and it runs normal.

then out of curiosity, i unplugged the hdmi cable from my tv and just connected one end to my desktop and the same problem occured. as soon as i connect the hdmi cable into the port my screen goes blank. regardless if the other end of the hdmi cable is is connected or not the screen goes blank.

i have absolutely no clue as to what this could be. any suggestions would be helpful guys!!

Solution
take the videocard out of the computer & see if the onboard video has the same problem with that hdmi cable & if so then try another hdmi cable even borrowed to see if works ok on both the onboard video & video card. could be a bad cable but leaning to bad hdmi port on video card.

nvidia geforce gtx 780, there was no issues before yesterday, and i havent really played around with the settings.

Solution
Also check the monitor supported frequencies vs. the driver setting for the video card.

Google will tell you what the monitor supports, but most panels are 60 hz.

The nvidia driver will tell you what the nvidia geforce gtx 780 is putting out. Look also to ensure that you did not trigger 3D output, that will also set the refresh much higher.

UPDATE:: to be clear, I like ffg7's debugging advice a lot. I'm just throwing this in as additional things to look at, not as a replacement.

tsnor, you might want to re-read this "then out of curiosity, i unplugged the hdmi cable from my tv and just connected one end to my desktop and the same problem occured. as soon as i connect the hdmi cable into the port my screen goes blank. regardless if the other end of the hdmi cable is is connected or not the screen goes blank." from Just_4's 1st post.

How did you interpret this?

I read it as when the video driver went to whatever profile it was using for dual monitor that the working monitor dropped? I've seen this with embedded 2nd monitor characteristics in Powerpoint when people plug in projectors. I've also seen this when a laptop's video output was accidently changed to 2nd monitor only when plugging in a projector. As I said, i do not rule out a bad cable or a bad port. But I would not be shocked if a clean uninstall of the video driver removing user profiles fixed the problem.
