Hi. I've been using my 7 year old Asus VGA monitor, and wanted to upgrade to a newer one. Been using DSR ever since.

First, here's my specs:

i5 4690k @4.7ghz
GTX 1070
16GB 1666mhz DDR3
Gigabyte Z87X-OC

I went to our local store, and found an Asus VC239H, which is a 1080p 60hz monitor. I was wondering if this would be a good upgrade. I do know that the 1070 is recommened to be partnered with a 1440p display, but in where I live, those monitors are very expensive. Any alternative would be appreciated as well.

Solution
You have a GTX1070?
There are several possibilities but it depends on your budget for the monitor.

Those possibilities are:
Low budget:
60Hz 1080p IPS display 24-27" e.g. U2414H
or
144Hz 1080p TN display 24-27" e.g. VG248QE

Moderate budget:
60Hz 1440p IPS display 27" e.g. PB278QR

High budget:
144Hz 1440p IPS display with or without GSync 27" e.g. PG279Q, XB271HU

If you want to really use the max of your GTX1070, skip any 60hz 1080p monitors e.g. VC239H. You would like to consider at least 144Hz 1080p or 60Hz 1440p as minimum.

I would not go too cheap for monitor because:
1. People incl. you and me tend to keep monitors longer than the PC.
2. You see what you really spent on the gaming PC only via monitor. GTX1070 + your i5 rig is...

3. Imagine you bought a Ferrari car, you would not wanna have a cheap Ford body and interior...would you? Monitor is that car body and interior.

I would go for the Dell 2417DG , why?
1) its a 1440p 24' monitor which mean awesome pixel density and noticeable difference from 24' 1080 when the 27' version is only when you want to get bigger but not lose quality so 24' 1440p > 27' 1440p in terms of sharpness , quality etc.....
2) gsync stacks perfectly with your 1070
3) 165hz oc
4) 1ms and extremely low input lag

What else do you want from a panel?
If you want a more gaming look then theres an Acer one with the same stats but dell is the cheapest 1440p 144hz and has better qc than the acer one.

guanyu210379 told almost everything right but i would definitely avoid the PG279Q as every unit has backlight bleeding , some of them got an unexceptable amount and in the end of the day you will end rma'ing 2-5 monitors until you find one with less problems.

Every 144Hz IPS monitors have this issue. All of them XB270HU, XB271HU, PG279Q, MG279Q, PG348Q, etc.
This technology is not yet stable.
But, it is totally worth the gamble and price.
You do not have to choose anymore between image quality incl. viewing angle and speed.
Just make sure you pick a trustworthy shop if you wanna have this type of monitor.
I was lucky enough to get a fully working XB270HU out of the first box. Friends of mine had to RMA it up to 4x.
